Generation One

1Levin1 Rubenstein1 was born circa 1797.2 He died on 14 Mar 1872 at Mitau, Courland, Russia; age 75.3

His Hebrew name was Joseph.4,5

2Bernard Joseph2 Rubenstein (Levin1)10,11 married Julia Lazarus, daughter of Moses Lazarus and Rebecca Schultz, in 1853.12,13
He and and Samuel Joseph Rubenstein were smuggled out of Latvia, then part of the Russian Empire to avoid the draft.15
He was in the  Tower Hamlets Volunteer Rifle, and may have commanded this force during the Crimean War. Letters between him and a friend of his at the front besieging Sabastapol are extant.14
He witnessed the death of Isodore Rubenstein on 23 Jul 1875 at ,m Newtown Road, 242, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England; "Isidore, beloved infant son of B. & F. (sic) Rubenstein, aged 5 weeks. May his soul rest in peace." TJV.16
He and Julia Lazarus appeared on the census of 1881 at Sevington St, 8, Paddington, London, England.17 As of 1881, Bernard Joseph Rubenstein and Julia Lazarus lived at Sevington St, 8, Paddington, London, England.18 As of 1891, Bernard Joseph Rubenstein and Julia Lazarus lived at  Sutherland Av, 46, London, England.19 He was a Commision Agent in 1891.20 He and Julia Lazarus appeared on the census of 1891 at Sutherland Av, 46, London, England.21

3Samuel Joseph2 Rubenstein (Levin1)58,59 married Sophia Dyte, daughter of David Dyte and Hannah Lazarus, in 1840.60
He and Bernard were smuggled out of Latvia, then part of the Russian Empire to avoid the draft."61
As of 1829, Samuel Joseph Rubenstein lived in Glasgow, Scotland: "... We are carried a stage further by two articles on the Ghetto in Glasgow, which appeared in the local Evening Citizen of 12th February and 1st March, 1894. From these it appears that the 'first settler' in the city and organiser of the community, of which he was still President in 1850, was the David Davis or Davies referred to. He was seconded by Wolf Levy and Henry Price (both furriers), -- Lesser, and -- Levy, a travelling stationer; and then, in 1829, by S. J. Rubinstein (grandfather of Harold Rubinstein, the dramatist)."65

14Rebecca Ida3 Rubenstein (Bernard2, Levin1)71 was born on 6 Nov 1876 at London, England.72 She was born in 1877 at Birmingham, England.73,74 She married David de Sola Cohen Rogers on 21 Mar 1906 at Lauderdale Road Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue, England.75 She died in 1974.76
She appeared on the census of 1881 in the household of Bernard Joseph Rubenstein and Julia Lazarus at Sevington St, 8, Paddington, London, England.77 She appeared on the census of 1891 in the household of Bernard Joseph Rubenstein and Julia Lazarus at Sutherland Av, 46, London, England.78
