This was accomplished by dropping Yiddish and using English for the rules, minutes and other official documents. .... Yiddish had ceased to be the daily language of most vestry members of the Exeter Congregation by 1823 .... It does not occasion any surprise to find the EXeter Jews aanxious to translate their regulations into English in 1823, as the more important members of the Congregation including the three chosen to do the translation were all Exeter born. the three translsators wer Henry Ezekiel, Eleazer Lazarus and Simon Levy, born in 1773,1789 and 1791 respectively in 1823 Susser describes him as one of "the more important members of the Congregation."12 He was New Tag in 1835.13 He and Esther Jacobs appeared on the census of 6 Jun 1841 atNorth Street, Exeter, Devon, England; (one female servant).14
