Lazarus (Moses1)5
was born in 1789 at Exeter,
Devon, England.6
Hemarried Julia
Solomon.7 He married Esther
Jacobs on 6 Sep 1840 at North
Street, Exeter, Devon, England; Esther was possibly married to a Jacobs
previously as she was 40 at the time of her marriage to Eliezer Lazarus,
in which case, Abraham Jacobs was probably her son from the earlier marriage.8
He died on 4 Nov 1845.9
.10
He was Jeweller.11
He was one of the Yiddish\English translators for the Exeter Congregation:
"..... by the turn of the first quarter of the nineteenth
century there was a strong movement towards anglicizing the conduct of
Congregational affairs in Exeter and Plymouth, and probaly in Falmouth
and Penzance. This was accomplished by dropping Yiddish and using English
for the rules, minutes and other official documents. .... Yiddish had ceased
to be the daily language of most vestry members of the Exeter Congregation
by 1823 .... It does not occasion any surprise to find the EXeter Jews
aanxious to translate their regulations into English in 1823, as the more
important members of the Congregation including the three chosen to do
the translation were all Exeter born. the three translsators wer Henry
Ezekiel, Eleazer Lazarus and Simon Levy, born in 1773,1789 and 1791 respectively

Moses Lazarus; born 17 Aug 1832 at Plymouth,

Susser's copy of the entry from the Plymouth Synagogue Birth Register (#4)
is : Isaac (Isaac ben Moses) son of L.Lazarus (Moses ben Judah) and his
wife M-----la, but Lippa's name should be Judah ben Moses, and Isaac presumably
should be 'ben Judah'.42
+ 20 vi. Fanny Lazarus,

suggests that his grandfather Francis Lyon ( Avigdor ben Moses Isaac) had
died relatively recently [L].47

as both are listed as "traveller" at some point, and the latter is living
