Lazarus
the Lazarus Family of Plymouth  & Exeter

Introduction
At the core of this site is the history of  the extended Lazarus family, members of the Jewish communities of Plymouth and Exeter in Devon, England. As several Lazarus descendants (affectionately known as Laz-R-Us) have found one another and combined information, the core has expanded to include the history of many other  families from the Jewish community in the South-West of England, with connections to Bristol, Bath, Birmingham, and to Wales. Records of these families go back at least as far as the late 1700's.

Relocation
Around the 1860's, most of the Lazarus family left Devon and relocated to London. Census records from 1871 and 1881 show that not only the extended Lazarus family, but many other families from Devon's Jewish community had settled in two neighbourhoods in London, around Russell  Square and in Maida Vale.
A number of the families left Britain altogether, emmigrating  worldwide. To 20 date, we know that members of the Lazarus familiy emigrated to  Argentina,  Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, and the United States.

Purpose
The purpose of this site is  to share information, and to help others with possible connections trace their  roots. Visitors are invited to submit related genealogies, histories and other information to be added to the site.

Histories
Descendancy lists are the  bare bones of genealogy, and do not tell us anything about the individuals,  or their roles in their communities. I hope that people will submit written histories, anecdotes, photographs, scans of interesting documents etc. that will flesh out the members of our family, or that may be of research interest to others.

Links & Bibliography
This is a list of links and books that have proved useful  in researching the information at this site.

Miscellaneous
The Miscellaneous page is intended as a catch-all for those unrelated individuals who appear as "visitors" on census records; for "Strays"; for those individuals one turns up during research who don't belong to one's own family, but who were members of the larger Jewish community of Devon, or indeed of Great Britain.
